Surprising Aerial Landscapes Created Using Shipping Supplies

One summer afternoon, we decided to put unwanted items in storage. We took a trip to Lowes Hardware Store, picked up some heavy duty moving boxes and headed for our local Target for packing supplies. When we got home, we started to assign a number of books, clothes etc. to their designated stations. As we sealed each box with tape, I noticed the elongated bubbles that formed beige rivers on the surface. Imagining this was an aerial view of a mysterious landscape, I carefully composed my shot. Initially, I had two different versions of this photograph. However, I was more pleased with the strength of the lines and texture of the back and white one.

Silvery wells gather the fragments of an unfolding chapter. Harsh lights scatter midnight shadows on the shoes of passing girls and middle aged women. Geometry enjoys a cocktail at the homes of wannabe socialites.

I’d love to add a big, mysterious, wonderfully poignant, life-changing story to this post, but it was, in reality, just another trip to the store.

Textured waves gently emerge from the darkness. They roll and twist like desert dunes straining to meet the light.  A discerning eye sees unexpected landscapes. The mind travels to hidden places yet to be explored.

In the midst of necessary remodeling and summer cleaning, I decided to use my wardrobe as inspiration for my next abstract photography series.  Lighting these objects to create the right mood, state of mind and illusion was a challenging endeavor.  There were times when I really wondered whether a certain object was interesting enough to photograph. Finally, I committed to the series and faced the technical and compositional problems that presented themselves during each shoot. Some artists that are not photographers seem to think that all a photographer needs to do is find a worthy subject and just snap a picture. They do not always respect the fact that each photographer has to instinctively know what will make a good photograph and from what angle they need to take their subject in order to engage the viewer.  Just as other artists have their tools, photographers also have to learn how to use their equipment to get the best results. This is a process that can take years to master.

Vibrant hues flow beneath the frozen, pebbled surface.  Each cell captures and fragments the unique color combinations it contains. A mysterious landscape is finally recovered, emerging from the depths of the unconscious mind.

This is the second picture taken from an object that I had posted earlier. It’s unusual, reflective texture was taken at a flooring store. I simply intensified the color, sharpened the overall image, and brought out its structure. Today is Independence day, so in honor of American Independence I decided to post a colorful photograph.  To all of my American readers, Happy Fourth of July!  To all of my international readers, have a wonderful, and art full weekend.

NEW Abstracted Landscapes: Rainscape Parking Lot Composition 1

Ominous grey clouds gather overhead. It begins to rain. Small round droplets position themselves strategically on the available glass windshield breaking up the dark parking lot across from the local Big Lots store. A large white truck hovers like a curious ghost, peering inside our car with it’s large dead eyes. I sit back slowly and reach into my purse. If I have to wait till the rain stops, I’ll take a picture, a permanent record of one of life’s frequent meditations.

It was raining one busy weekend.  My mother and I had stopped at a local Big Lots store to take advantage of one of their sales on large fabric containers.  We combed the store desperately trying to find the containers before it started to rain. In the first pass we missed the containers completely, but when we asked one of the sales clerks for help, she quickly pointed out their location. Unfortunately, the navy containers that my sister had asked for were not available.  We headed back to the car and my mother called my sister to let her know what colors were available. When my sister had made her decision, my mother headed back to the store.  I chose to stay behind and take this picture.

Extreme Nature Series: Abstracted Sky and Trees

The rain had lifted. Streaks of grey clouds covered the suburban landscape as a flock of birds sat patiently in a large parking lot tree. A soft halo of light crowned the natural specimen in a temporary glory. I lifted my new LG G3  smart phone to the above scene described and gently tapped the camera icon. The phone made a triumphant popping sound as the scene was captured. Some added filters, saturation and mild sharpening later, the desired mood was set; the photo was complete.

It was a friday afternoon and Mom and I had settled on the idea of visiting our favorite Wing Stop restaurant. She decided to stop for money on the way, so we visited our local H.E.B. grocery store. When we pulled into the parking lot, I spotted the tree with its cargo. I knew I had to stay behind while she went to the ATM. This was a chance to use my new phone. I must report that I was impressed with everything the camera on this phone has to offer. It’s a smart buy, light weight, user friendly and has an excellent camera with a variety of filters and effects. For all you on-the-go camera enthusiasts, if you forget your DSLR or subcompact at home, the LG G3 is an excellent alternative.
